The church today is lacking in its understanding in the basics of good Bible doctrine. The learning of God's word correctly provides the foundation to practically apply the word in everyday life. Dr. John Piper talks about the tension that exists between the sovereignty of God and the free will of man. Even though it is a mystery for a finite mind to capture and bring together this infinite thought process we must teach and preach both!

During this men's Bible study we look at the importance of the gospel. Many times people have been in churches for years but have a difficult time understanding and being able to explain the gospel. This is a teaching that covers 4 basics:
- Purpose of God
- Problem with man
- Solution in Christ
- Application of faith

Here is the rage on the college campuses now-a-days. It is called a gospel presentation that uses four circles but there is one major problem. It doesn't contain the gospel message at all. It is a way we can live better lives in order to go and heal the planet.

Do you know why we fall for these types of gimmicks? Because we don't know our Bibles nor what the gospel is, or even how to articulate it to others. Therefore we become subject to deceptions, deceits and counterfeit gospel presentations.

The doctrine of regeneration seems to be a lost doctrine by today's standards. We as believers in Christ need to understand what it means from Scripture and how should we articulate this truth to others.

John MacArthur gives a very short but concise picture for how application works in regard to exegetical preaching. Here is a man that has faithfully preached the gospel for 40 years at Grace Community Church in California. Keep preaching the truth Dr. MacArthur!

Joel Osteen is at it again. Preaching what people want to hear instead of what is in the Bible. This is a "name it and claim it" or "blab it and grab it" type of prosperity gospel that is a TOTAL distortion of God's word. Many, many people are deceived to the point where they embrace and go for these types of messages hook, line and sinker. As Chris Rosebrough says in the review of this short audio clip, this is nothing short than the doctrine of demons. Folks remember this is from the man who has the largest church audience in America. The ears are getting tickled because people are coming to hear exactly what they want, but unfortunately it is not what the Bible says!

This is a Bible study parody from Chris Rosebrough at Fighting for the Faith. It is a take off on the Rex Quando character in Napoleon Dynamite but has a thread of truth as to how we can approach Bible study in 21st Century America.

This is a small excerpt from Michael Horton's DVD series on "Christless Chrisitianity." In this audio segment he discusses the recent statistics that George Barna has put forth for Christians to consider. These stats are alarming and should cause many to test themselves to see if they really are in the faith.

When Christ said these words in Mark 1:15 He said them in their original Greek verb form. Therefore we need to know that in the Greek these two verbs in Mark 1:15 are both in the present tense which means continually and habitually, along with the imperative mood which means a command. Jesus is not inviting people to pray a prayer and ask Him into your heart but rather is issuing a command to be in a constant state of repentance and believing. We need to understand that the gospel is not just a past thing but a continual thing in the life of a Christian.

This is an audio segment from Chris Rosebrough with Pirate Christian Radio regarding the Trinity. The question Chris will ask is this, if we don't believe in the Trinity as described in the Bible can we be considered genuine Christians. I think he gives a very good theological argument for what happens when we theologically construct a false god and not the God of the Bible. Even though this is a rather lengthy (about 20 minutes) it will help those in the body of Christ understand why we must know the God of the Bible and not one that we make up in our mind.

Probably the most asked question from Christians is the following:
How does the Bible reconcile the sovereignty of God and the free will of man?
In this short audio Dr. John MacArthur gives a very good explanation of the why and how this is Biblical. If you are struggling with this question may I recommend that you listen carefully!

This is powerful preaching from Jono Sims who breaks down John 3:16 into 5 teaching points regarding salvation. Pastor Sims has a strong Southern accent as he bold proclaims the gospel of Christ. Dr. Filbert Bukk is a first cousin once removed. He shares years of wisdom and encourages others to live Biblically and practically in these days. He is not just another pretty face and when he talks people definitely listen. Hope this will add to your season cheer as the good doctor encourages us to have our daily devotions or else.

There is much confusion today in the evangelical church about genuine salvation. Many people have been led to believe that if they walk the aisle, pray a prayer, raise their hand, join the church or get baptized then they are saved. The problem is that a person will say in a past tense reference yes that is something that I did. Instead they need to understand that salvation is something that you continue to do for the rest of your life. Listen to this audio from Pastor Jeff Nobitt on the subject of "are you really saved?"

There is much filtering in the evangelical church today in the form of "mysticism." Most Christians have no background, nor have they done any research on this subject. However once you start to look at it closely one sees that this is never taught in the Bible. It sounds good, and the words used are those that identify with feelings and experiences. But think where in Scripture does God ever promise experiences.

Get ready for the next new fad for the 21st post-modern "church" crowd. Yes it is "lectio divina" that is a practice from the monastic period and promotes spiritual contemplation. Hey folks whatever happened to reading the Bible in the power of the Spirit? Anyway here is Chris Rosebrough doing a parody of Rob Bell who is an "Emergent" guru. This is really hilarious and will give you an idea what "lectio divina" is and how it is supposed to work. We are moving from a Biblical view of Christ to a more Catholic view of Christ and the bridge seems to be the Emergent group.
Beware of this, for it comes as a wolf in sheep's clothing.

What are our churches preaching today? Is the Christian life about how to have a better marriage, raise better kids, feed the homeless or have better relationships with the neighbors? Or is the Christian life about Christ and His death on the cross which atones for our sins and His righteousness that is imputed to us. In a day and time where we are hearing lots of deeds instead of creeds we need to sort out the real gospel. Michael Horton talks about his new book "Christless Christianity and where we have moved in the modern day church as to how this is viewed.

If God is only a means to your own self advancement then you need to check your conversion. When you receive the gospel the ultimate prize is God Himself. If you just want to get out of hell, have your conscience relieved of guilt or see family members that you can spend eternity with, then these things are not saving affections. But if you have a passion for Christ, a love for the things of God and you want to spend eternity with Him in order that He is glorified then you understand the gospel. The modern gospel is something that we have bought into due to the lack of good Bible training. Many today would claim that "doctrine" divides but it is the very thing we need to correct interpret the Scriptures. What does the modern gospel sound like? Does the Bible say we are to make a decision for Jesus? Is there any language in which Christ said we are to ask Him in our heart? Are we somehow cooperating with Him in this plan of salvation? Paul Washer in this short audio clip talks about the dangers of the modern gospel.

We conclude our men's fall 2008 Bible study with this session. It begins with a warning regarding the false doctrine that continues to attack the evangelical church. Then we move from that to the feeding of the 5000 from Mark 6 and the hardening of the disciples hearts. And from there we go to Mark 8 and the feeding of the 4000 in which Jesus comments on the disciples hard hearts.

How often do we start Bible study, reading or devotion without ever addressing the issue of our hearts. It seems that the devil, flesh and the world are continuing to build a hard layer over the heart. And yet we become more and more used to and accustomed to our own sin to the point where it doesn't even bother us.

Oh that we as the people of God would come back to the basics of REPENTANCE AND BELIEF.

We live in a time where people know about God but they don't know God. How are we to know Him if we don't know His word? And why are so many being told that doctrine is divisive instead of critical for Christian growth into Christ-likeness.
In this short audio clip, Paul Washer discusses an indictment against the church in the lack of the knowledge of God. May we as a people of God get back to the word of God so that the word of God may get back into us!

This morning with looked at the heart of man that is described in the Bible. We first went to Genesis 6:5 and then Jeremiah 17:9. And apart from the grace of God we learned that no one is good, and no man desires God. Therefore unless our lives are intersected by the gospel there is no hope. Unfortunately we place our hope in all kinds of things like friends, job, finances, talents and family. This session focuses on the result of being God-centered in our thinking as opposed to man-centered.

Is the emerging church within the main stream evangelical camp? Are those within this movement preaching a false gospel? Exactly how are we to define the emerging church?
Dr. John MacArthur takes on this question and gives us a solid Biblical answer.

I am teaching on the glory of God in our Sunday School Class at the moment. Here is a brief article that will help set up this podcast.

The glory of God is a category that we, as Christians, have unfortunately neglected in our Bible study. As you read through the Bible this year, you will find a God who is supremely valuable and infinitely glorious. And in the Old and New Testament we can see that God does ultimately all that He does for His glory. Even as the apostle Paul concludes , he summarizes by saying; "for from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen" There is much depth, width and breadth in this statement for Paul as in regard to the glory of God. And yet as Christians we have not become deeply rooted in this truth. Unfortunately we have been distracted by media, entertainment and quick fix solutions to improve self image and self development.

This is an podcast update for our SS Community at Carmel. It gives a summary of where we have been and what the class can expect as we head toward 2009.

Our men's study looked at how the heart tends to gravitate toward a gospel in which we are the focus. Of course in the Bible the centered piece of the gospel is Christ Himself.
This is a partial recording of our study this morning.

There is some teaching today in the church growth movement that indicates we need to find out what the world wants, find out how we can provide it for them as a way to attract them into the church. The strategy is flawed from the beginning my one key but vital premise. Those who are outside of Christ have no idea what they want or need outside of their sinful and lost condition before a holy God. Therefore the gospel must be preached in a way to convict sinners and let them know that without Christ they will face the wrath of God. The wrath is a present wrath on planet earth and an eternal wrath one day in an eternal hell.
I pray that those of you who listen to this brief message by Paul Washer have ears to hear.

Romans 8:13– How to kill the flesh

Step #1 - Set your mind on the things of the Spirit –
The mind is a moral muscle and Jesus and the disciples assumed that could be done and it can be done with the mind. You can set it and focus it and hold it there if you are willing to fight

Step #2 – - But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised
“things of the Spirit” are the word of God and now look at the killing instrument of the Spirit which is the sword that is referred to in . Why does He call it the sword? It is the word of God that we see in that is released in order to be able to kill the deeds of the flesh.
If you are going to kill sin then you will need a sword and the sword is the word of God
It is the word permeated through the Spirit and it is the Spirit through the word
For the sword and the hand that holds it are one and they can not be separated

Step #3 – What is the only offensive weapon that is listed in
It is the sword of the Spirit, which we learn is the word of God.

Step #4 – How do you bring the Spirit to bear upon the deeds of the body?
Look at - So then, does He who provides you with the Spirit and works miracles among you, do it by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith?
We all have flesh that raises its crucified head and tries to take us captive then we will hear by faith.

Step #5 – And how does hearing with faith come?
- “and faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of Christ.”

Living by the Spirit means to live daily in and through the word of God. As we do this we will be constantly killing the flesh that is so deadly to our Christian walk.

Dr. John MacArthur gives some practical advice on how to study the Bible.

This morning in our men's Bible study we looked at the 3 obstacles to the heart from the "parable of the sower"
1. Satan snatches the word
2. The flesh causes a falling away from the word
3. The world chokes out the word with worries and desires

The only way seed grows is in the soil of a heart that is receptive to God's word. My problem is that unless God does a supernatural work on my heart I will not desire it at all. But in those where the heart is receptive the fruit is bearing at a rate of 30,60 and 100 fold.

It is a dangerous methodology that is prevalent in American church evangelism today. Getting people to come forward, in order to make a decision for Christ. However that kind of language appears nowhere in the Bible. But people hear it, embrace it and become followers of it in a traditional sense instead of examining against Scripture. In this short audio Paul Washer explains the problem. May God give ears to hear the truth of His word!

This is the second session of a men's Bible study. We are discussing why the is little Bible reading and devotion within the church.
Basic reasons given are as follows:
1. Motivation
2. Priority
3. Skills and Tools
4. Spiritual Condition

When it is all said and done the Lord Jesus teaches that the heart is really the problem. Luke 24 and this morning we studied the parable of the sower in Mark 4:1-20.

Jesus said "I am THE way and THE truth and THE life, no man comes to the Father but by Me." When you replace the "definite"article THE with the "indefinite" article A then you lose Christianity, Christ and Salvation! He isn't just a way folks He is THE only way to eternal life.

Just to give you a heads up todays podcast has a little Cold Play intro and then Matt Foley motivational speaker that leads us into Joel Osteen. So you can already tell this will be quite exciting as we move and groove, shake and bake, shuck and jive, bring and brag, tell and sell, and slam and jam our way to podcast nirvana.

Rick Warren in this audio segment is preaching about financial management of our resources. When you hear this message it is not salvation by grace but rather salvation by works. Warren makes heaven conditional as to how one is handling the finances that they have been given by God. Does this mean that Bill Gates gets an automatic pass because he is such a good steward of his money? Where is the gospel of salvation by grace alone, through faith alone in Christ alone in this sermon? It sounds like you are saved by something other than Jesus when you listen to this message.

Listen carefully to this audio session. If you are in a church that is not preaching the full gospel then find one that is and find it quickly. Your life depends on it!

We live in a works based culture. Therefore are we surprised when so many "professing" Christians think they have to obey in order to get God's approval. Instead if they trust Christ as LORD and Savior then they already have God's approval which results in them wanting to obey. Joel Osteen needs to be on SNL and be Stuart Smalley. This review of his book a better you is incredible by Chris Rosebrough of Extreme Theology. I was going to do it myself and have all the clever responses but Chris is simply too good. Here is a shout out to my brother in Christ, Mr. Chris Rosebrough because you nailed it with Joel Osteen. Osteen is all about the gifts but not about the Giver, all about the blessings but not about the Blessor. Folks this is not the gospel this is just self help repackage in religious language.
Please don't fall for it!

In Luke 24 staring in verse 13 we read about the two men on the road to Emmaus meeting with the living Lord Jesus. How sad that they initially didn't even recognize Him. Eventually the Lord Jesus directs them to their real problem which is a bad heart. This podcast is designed to look at the problem today with why people do not read, devote or study their Bibles. It just may surprise you to find out what these two men learned and how they responded.

There is real confusion today in the evangelical church when it comes to the words interpretation and meaning. We should know that interpretation resides with the reader and meaning resides with the author. The rule of good Bible study is as follows:
There is only one correct meaning for any one Scripture and the meaning is equal to the author's intended meaning. That is the point that Dr. John MacArthur gets across to the audience in this short clip.

In America we have come to the place where Bible interpretation means whatever the Bible means to you. However this is NOT an orthodox evangelical way to interpret the Bible. We know that there is only one correct interpretation for any one Scripture. And the correct interpretation is equal to what the author meant at the time he wrote it.

But I thought these were the cutting edge guys who were going to impress us with how to do 21st church. It looks to me like they are copying each other. The bottom line is the senior pastor admitting to his church that the seeker-friendly approach did not work. Dr. Albert Mohler Jr., president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary gives a review of the popular book called "The Shack."
